She was a student at Bonita Vista High School and Chula Vista School of the Creative and Performing Arts. Carpenter took a trip to Europe following her graduation. Carpenter returned to San Diego and worked in the video store, working as an aerobics instructor, property management, and as a clerk. She also was a cheerleader for San Diego Chargers football in 1991. She moved to Los Angeles in 1992. In 1991, Henry Hubbard Jr. was a tyrant who attacked her and two male acquaintances as they were swimming in San Diego. He was a former San Diego cop and serial rapist , who tried to intimidate them using a gun. The two of them, Henry Hubbard Jr. as well as her companions were wounded in the fight. Both survived. Hubbard was taken into custody and was convicted and sentenced to 56 years in prison, for numerous rapes.
