Melanie Jayne Lynskey, born 16 May 1977 is a New Zealand actress. She is known for playing humorous, soft-spoken, but strong characters. She primarily works in films that are independent. She's won an award from the New Zealand Film Award as well as a Hollywood Film Award as well as the Sundance Special Jury Award. Lynskey made her film debut , playing a teenage murderess , in Peter Jackson's Heavenly Creatures (1994). After moving to the United States, she built an acting career by playing supporting roles in a myriad of big-budget and small-scale features, like Ever After (1998), Detroit Rock City, But I'm a Cheerleader (both 1999), Coyote Ugly (2000), Abandon, Sweet Home Alabama (both 2002) Shattered Glass (2003), Flags of Our Fathers (2006), Away We Go, Up in the Air, The Informant!, Leaves of Grass (all 2009), Win Win (2011) and Seeking an Friend at the End of the World, The Perks of Being a Wallflower (both 2012) and they came Together (2014), and Don't Turn Your Head Up (2021). Lynskey has received praise from critics and a nomination for the Gotham Award for Breakthrough Performer for her performance in the film as a divorced woman who is depressed. Hello I Must Be Going (2012), which was a turning moment for her career. Her subsequent lead roles in Happy Christmas and We'll Never Have Paris (all 2014), The Intervention (all 2016), Rainbow Time, Little Boxes, I Don't Feel At Home in This World Anymore (both 2017), Lady of the Manor (2021), Sadie (2018), and Lady of the Manor (both 2018) established her status as an influential figure within the American independent movie community. She was the central character of Togetherness from 2015-2016, where she was nominated by the Critics' Choice Television Awards for the award for Best Supporting Actress. She was the voice of Beatrice on the Cartoon Network's Over the Garden Wall (2014) and Megan for Disney XD's Future-Worm! (2016-2018). She starred in Molly Strand's first season on Hulu (2018) as well as Rosemary Thomson was her role in Mrs. America (2020).
