her Korean mother and a French-Russian father, who was working there as a
consul with the French government. Eugene Klementieff was her grandfather. Her
parents picked the name "Pom" because it is identical in
pronunciation to Korean words for "spring" and "tiger".
Klementieff lived for a year in Canada prior to moving her family around extensively
due to her father's job. Prior to making the move to France they resided in
Japan as well as on the Ivory Coast. Klementieff lost her father to cancer at
the age of five. Her mother was also diagnosed with schizophrenia. Klementieff
was raised in France by her aunt and uncle paternal. Her uncle, whom she
described as "like her father" was killed on her 18th birthday, as
did her older brother, who was killed just seven years later, this the time on
her 25th birthday. After her uncle's passing, Klementieff was a law student for
a brief time to please her aunt. But she didn't think the path was appealing.
She also worked as a waitress and saleswoman in France. In the Cours Florent
drama academy in Paris, she began acting at the age of 19. After her studies
were completed she was awarded an acting competition that granted her two years
of tuition free alongside some of the top teachers at the school. Klementieff
was the stepdaughter of Catherine Deneuve in Apres lui (2006), her first role
as an actor professionally. Filming the scenes required three days. In one
scene, Klementieff was supposed to push someone down a set of steps but fell
down the steps herself, and director Gael Morel kept that shot for the final
film. Her first leading role was in Loup (2009) the French film about a tribe
of reindeer herders located in the Siberian mountains. Klementieff was filming
at the camp that was located hours away from the nearest village. The camp was
where temperatures plunged to zero.
