Ava DuVernay's birth was on the 24th of August, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay was able to explore her artistic and creative side in her early years due to her aunt Denise. The aunt was on during the night shift as a nurse so she could pursue her love for art literature and theater during the day. She introduced DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay was captivated by it. DuVernay saw how art was an effective way to spread the cause of activism. Her mother was also a social consciousness and taught DuVernay to express herself via artwork. DuVernay was raised in Compton by her parents, but spent the summers with Lowndes County Alabama. This is the place where her father's family has lived for many generations. DuVernay's dad recalled the Civil Rights marches that occurred on the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close-by town Selma in Alabama. The summers DuVernay spent there inspired her later to write a script for a film based on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay was a graduate from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in 1990. Following graduation, DuVernay enrolled in the University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English as well as African American study. DuVernay started producing for the broadcast industry while she was in her the college. Her first job was as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was assigned to the watch and search the home of a particular Jury member. The work she was assigned to did not leave her satisfied with journalism so she decided to move towards the field of publicity. DuVernay got her first job as a publicity specialist in a small production studio right after she graduated from school. She started The DuVernay Agency, her company for public relations in 1999. The agency was the first to launch a variety of lifestyle and promotion networks that include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
